Genital prolapse in women treated successfully and unsuccessfully by the Burch colposuspension

Abstract: The results imply an association between the occurrence of rectocele and cystocele and the outcome of the colposuspension. Different etiologies seem to exist for rectocele/cystocele, compared to enterocele or uterine/vaginal vault descent formation in women with stress urinary incontinence, operated upon with the Burch colposuspension.

“…The prevalence of genital prolapse surgery and hysterectomy in the comparison group correspond to previously reported material from our region (20). In the patient group, the prevalence of genital prolapse surgery was in accordance with other studies of Bc (18,28). According to an epidemiological study by Olsen et al (29), the lifetime risk of undergoing a single operation for prolapse or urinary incontinence was 11% for 80-year-old women.…”

“…This is one of the negative sides of the Bc. The occurrence of genital prolapse has also been shown to increase after a Bc (16)(17)(18), but recently, Kwon et al (10) opposed the correlation. Voiding difficulties are also related to the Bc because of the obstructive nature of the procedure on the urethra (4,5,9,17,19), and it has been shown to persist at long-term follow-up.…”

“…Burch colposuspension (Bc) is considered as one of the most effective operations for treatment of genuine stress urinary incontinence (1)(2)(3). The method is, however, encumbered with a significant postoperative morbidity such as increased occurrence of genital prolapse and voiding difficulties (4)(5)(6)(7)(8). The long-term result concerning continence even seems to decline with time (6,(8)(9)(10).…”
