Genital tract microbial isolate in women with preterm pre-labour rupture of membranes in resource-constrained community setting

Abstract: This study determined patterns of microbial isolates in genital tract of women with preterm pre-labour rupture of membranes (PPROM) compared with cases without PPROM. Endocervical swabs of women with confirmed diagnosis of PPROM were examined microbiologically and compared in blinded pattern with gestational-age-matched controls. One hundred and five microbiological results each for cases and controls were analysed. Positive microbial cultures were seen in 79.05% of cases versus 6.67% of controls. Streptococcu… Show more

“…[ 15 23 24 ] Some studies have shown that infection with GBS might release cytokines and other inflammatory modulators which could cause membrane rupture. [ 23 25 ] This study found an association between PPROM and GBS. In this study, the prevalence rates of GBS in the women with PPROM ranged from 4.2% to 22.3%, similar with the results of other studies.…”

“…Two of these studies reported PPROM. 6,27 Pregnant women with trichomoniasis had 1.87 times the odds of PROM compared with uninfected women (OR 1.87; 95% CI 1.53-2.29) (Figure 2). Heterogeneity among studies was low (Cochran's Q test P = 0.28; I 2 = 19%).…”

“…Among the studies included in this meta-analysis, nine did not report how estimated gestational age was determined. 6,8,22,[25][26][27]47,50,51 Those that did report this used either the mother's last menstrual period, ultrasound or a combination of the two (Table S1).…”

“…AmnioQuick Duo+ also identified women with PROM who did not go on to deliver within the next 7 days. This might help to circumvent the substantial costs associated with unnecessary hospitalization, the maternal risks associated with prolonged antibiotics, and the fetal risks associated with steroid therapy …”

“…This might help to circumvent the substantial costs associated with unnecessary hospitalization, the maternal risks associated with prolonged antibiotics, and the fetal risks associated with steroid therapy. 24,25 The main strengths of the present study are its double-blind design and strictly defined inclusion criteria. To the best of our knowledge, no other study has reported the diagnostic indices of AmnioQuick Duo+ as compared with PAMG-1 for the exclusive diagnosis of prolonged PROM.…”
