Genitoanal Papillomavirus Infection: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Objectives in the Light of Current Epidemiological Observations

Abstract: Summary: During the past decade a wide span of heterogeneity has been demonstrated for human papillomaviruses (HPVs), and some basic properties of the HPV genome have been revealed. The use of hybridization assays for HPV DNA detection in infected epithelia, and the recent introduction of synthetic HPV peptides for detection of type-specific circulating antibodies, have resulted in a major rethinking of HPV epidemiology. Recent data indicate that various HPVs may be transmitted perinatally during early infancy… Show more

“…Histopathologically, the presence of koilocytosis is considered a pathognomonic sign of HPV infection. 6 In the present study, HPV infection was confirmed in all lesions either by demonstration of koilocytosis or by positive DNA probing. About 90% of the examined lesions were positive in the HPV-DNA hybridisation test and the sensitivity for koilocytosis histologically was in the same range, 88%.…”

“…Antibodies against HPV types 6, 16, and 18 as well as a high prevalence of HPV in oral scrapings in children have been demonstrated (Jenison et al, 1990). Little is known about subclinical CHPI (von Krogh, 1991) and about events that up-regulate a latent HPV infection.…”
