Genome characterization of a porcine circovirus type 3 in South China

Abstract: Summary Porcine circovirus type 3 (PCV3) is a novel circovirus that was associated with porcine dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome, reproductive failure, and multisystemic inflammation. Recently, a PCV3 strain was identified from pyretic and pneumonic piglets in Guangdong province, China. This virus strain was sequenced and designated PCV3‐China/GD2016. The complete genome of PCV3‐China/GD2016 is 2,000 bp in length and shared 99.1% and 99.1% nucleotide identities with PCV3/29160 and PCV3/2164, respectively. [… Show more

“…No PCV3 genomes were recovered from control sows on the same farms, which had no stillbirth events. Other authors associated PCV3 with cases of cardiac and multisystemic inflammation (Phan et al., ), PDNS, reproductive failure (Palinski et al., ), pyrexia and respiratory disease (Shen et al., ). In addition, high PCV3 viral loads were found in aborted fetuses by qPCR (Palinski et al., ).…”

“…Interestingly, no PCV2 genomes were detected in those studies, though those conditions are often associated with PCV2 infections (Palinski et al., ; Phan et al., ). In China, PCV3 genomes were identified in piglets with anorexia, fever and respiratory disease, negative for PCV2, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and pseudorabies virus (Shen et al., ); in addition, PCV3 was also suspected to be associated with reproductive failure (Ku et al., ). These reports are of particular importance in view that PCV3 may play some role in the aetiology of such conditions, all highly significant in swine production.…”

“…Some isolates from China shared high identity with PCV3/29160 and PCV3/2164 from USA (Shen et al . ). The CAP protein of Korean strains shared over 98% identities to that of the US strains (Kwon et al .…”

“…Since the pigs were co-infected with other porcine viruses, the pathogenicity of PCV3 warrants further investigations. PCV3 was found to be associated with porcine dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome (PDNS), reproductive failure, and multisystemic inflammation in China [75,76] and in the USA [77]. Sequence analysis showed that the Chinese isolates are the result of a recombination between bat circoviruses [76], and the closest relative of the U.S.A. isolate is a canine circovirus [77].…”
