Genome-Wide Analysis Reveals the Potential Role of MYB Transcription Factors in Floral Scent Formation in Hedychium coronarium

Abstract: The MYB gene family is one of the largest groups of transcription factors (TFs) playing diverse roles in several biological processes. Hedychium coronarium (white ginger lily) is a renowned ornamental plant both in tropical and subtropical regions due to its flower shape and strong floral scent mainly composed of terpenes and benzenoids. However, there is no information available regarding the role of the MYB gene family in H. coronarium. In the current study, the MYB gene family was identified and extensively… Show more

“…The transcriptional regulatory network governing floral scent emission has not been thoroughly elucidated. To date, only a few TFs that regulate the expression of scent-related genes have been identified ( Katiyar et al, 2012 ; Abbas et al, 2021b ). R2R3-MYB TFs are key regulators of the phenylpropanoid and terpenoids biosynthetic pathway in plants ( Du et al, 2009 ; Zhu et al, 2015 ; Yang et al, 2020 ).…”

“…After this, the bottle was immediately closed with aluminum foil. After 30 min, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS, with 50/30 µm divinylbenzene/Carboxen, Supelco) fiber was injected into the bottle for 30 min to trap the volatiles, which was followed by insertion into a GC–MS (Agilent) or E-nose system for volatile analysis, as described previously [ 11 , 43 ]. The HS-SPME extraction was performed at 26 ± 2 °C.…”

“…With respect to their floral scent, Hedychium species vary from scentless to rich in fragrance with high ornamental values [ 6 , 7 , 8 ]. The flowers of Hedychium are rich in an aroma that is mainly composed of a mixture of monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, and benzenoids [ 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ]. Recently, the main focus has been on the physio-biochemical properties of Hedychium ; however, there are few reports on the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the floral volatile profiles of Hedychium .…”

“…White ginger lily (H. coronarium) is famous due to its pure white color and butterfly flower shape. The H. coronarium flower emits a strong aroma, which is a combination of several floral volatiles including terpenes, benzenoids, and phenylpropanoids [1][2][3][4][5]. Monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes are the major floral volatile contents of this breed, and in our previous studies we identified several key volatile synthesis genes (HcTPS1/2/3/5/7/8/10, HcBSMT1/2, HcIAA2/4, HcARF5 and HcPAL) involved in floral aroma biosynthesis [6][7][8][9].…”
