Genome-wide association analysis of egg production performance in chickens across the whole laying period

Abstract: Background Egg production is the most economically-important trait in layers as it directly influences benefits of the poultry industry. To better understand the genetic architecture of egg production, we measured traits including age at first egg (AFE), weekly egg number (EN) from onset of laying eggs to 80 weeks which was divided into five stage (EN1: from onset of laying eggs to 23 weeks, EN2: from 23 to 37 weeks, EN3: from 37 to 50 weeks, EN4: from 50 to 61 weeks, EN5: from 61 to 80 weeks) bas… Show more

“…Molecular marker technology is helpful in revealing differences in the composition or arrangement of the whole genome or variation at the nucleotide level within a gene, providing insight into DNA variability and polymorphism. It can also be used to identify individuals containing target genes by genotype analysis of closely linked genetic markers of target genes, which can help improve selection efficiency (e.g., by reducing blind search) and accelerate the breeding process [3]. Compared with the use of traditional genetic markers, molecular marker-assisted selection (MAS) provides many marker loci, a large amount of genetic information, and strong repeatability of experiments, and it is not susceptible to environmental impacts and has no limitations regarding sex and age.…”

“…Sichuan White is a popular Chinese goose breed reared for both meat and eggs. While egg laying and egg quality traits have been studied intensively in avians, including chickens [29,30], ducks [15,31], and quail [32], few studies have examined traits other than those associated with egg laying in the goose genome [13].…”

“…Compared with other technologies, whole-genome resequencing technology is a high-throughput sequencing approach with efficient, accurate, full information characteristics (Fuentes-Pardo and Ruzzante, 2017). Moreover, whole-genome resequencing is one of the efficient and powerful strategies to screen the genes or loci in the genome widely, especially for the unknown gene and structural variation, which have been widely applied in marker-assisted selection in animals, such as the chicken (Liu et al, 2018b(Liu et al, , 2019, duck (Rowland et al, 2018;Zhou et al, 2018), goose (Zhao et al, 2020), cattle (Freebern et al, 2020), pig (Zhang et al, 2019), and sheep (Kominakis et al, 2017).…”
