Direct identification of non-polio enteroviruses in residual paralysis cases by analysis of VP1 sequences

“…Three were caused by imported wild polioviruses; 17 were caused by vaccine-like polioviruses (with less than 1% nucleotide differences in VP 1 region in comparison with oral polio vaccine strains); and 239 were caused by different serotypes of non-polio enteroviruses (NPEVs) (echoviruses 3-7, 9, 12, 18, 33, and coxsackie B5) yield a virus isolate in cell cultures and RT-PCR. 19,20 The remaining 29 cases did not yield a virus isolate in cell cultures.
