Genomic biomarkers related to drug response in Venezuelan populations

Abstract: Pharmacogenetics is being applied to develop individual specific therapies considering different ethnic groups and mixed populations. The Venezuelan population is very heterogeneous as a result of the admixture process that occurred between Native Americans, Europeans, and Africans through five centuries. This review provides a summary of the literature concerning gene variants within drug-metabolizing enzymes, drug targets, and drug receptors (CYP2C19, CYP2D6, GSTM1, GSTT1, GSTP1, NAT2, MTHFR, LEP, LEPR, LTC4… Show more

“…In other European countries, it is low like Turkey (13.2%), Italy (16.4%), and Greece (17.7%). 40 Populations in other areas of the world like Australia (17.8-24.5%), 41,42 European Canadians (19%), 43 the Bari population in Venezuela (25%), 44 and the Russia (17.4-27.1%) [45][46][47] show allele frequency similar to our result. Some others, show the lowered frequency like Middle Eastern (6.9%), 48 Saudi (3.5%), 49 Chinese (1%), 50 and Japanese (not detected).…”

“…Nanjing, China) may have influenced the response rate to chemotherapy. Many studies report that genetic polymorphisms exist in different races, especially in drug-metabolizing enzymes, drug targets, and drug receptors [ 14 , 15 ]. These genetic polymorphisms may have contribution to the response rate.…”
