Genomic Exploration of the Hemiascomycetous Yeasts: 9. Saccharomyces kluyveri

Abstract: The genome of Saccharomyces kluyveri was explored through 2528 random sequence tags with an average length of 981 bp. The complete nuclear ribosomal DNA unit was found to be 8656 bp in length. Sequences homologous to retroelements of the gypsy and copia types were identified as well as numerous solo long terminal repeats. We identified at least 1406 genes homologous to Saccharomyces cerevisiae open reading frames, with on average 58.1% and 72.4% amino acid identity and similarity, respectively. In addition, by… Show more

“…Among 682 couples of genes [29], we observed 56.5% conserved synteny between the two yeasts. This value is close to S. kluyveri (53.5%) [30], K. lactis (47.3%) [31], and K. marxianus var. marxianus (49.8%) [32].…”

“…Genes present in paralogous gene families represent only 4.5% of the newly identi¢ed genes in S. servazzii. This is much less than what was observed in other species [21,22]. Among the S. servazzii paralogues identi¢ed here, ORFs involved in transport are the most frequent.…”

“…As their counterparts in S. cerevisiae, the S. exiguus COX1 and COB genes exhibit a mosaic intronic structure, but the ai1, ai2, ai5K, ai5L, and ai5Q introns of COX1 [18] were not detected in S. exiguus. Similar observations have been reported for S. kluyveri and S. servazzii [12,16], suggesting a di¡erent organization of introns. Several intronic ORFs were also detected to be associated to COX1, COB and the 21S rRNA gene.…”

“…DNA fragmentation and cloning, as well as the quality control of the library, were performed as described by Neuvëglise et al [12]. A set of 1389 clones was sequenced by Gënoscope [13].…”
