Fusarium head blight (FHB) is one of the most devastating wheat disease due to its direct detrimental effects on grain-yield, quality and marketability. Resistant cultivars offer the most effective approach to manage FHB; however, the lack of different resistance resources is still a major bottleneck for wheat breeding programs. To identify and dissect FHB resistance, a doubled haploid wheat population produced from the Canadian spring wheat cvs AAC Innova and AAC Tenacious was phenotyped for FHB response variables incidence and severity, visual rating index (VRI), deoxynivalenol (DON) content, and agronomic traits days to anthesis (DTA) and plant height (PHT), followed by single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and simple sequence repeat (SSR) marker genotyping. A high-density map was constructed consisting of 10,328 markers, mapped on all 21 chromosomes with a map density of 0.35 cM/marker. Together, two major quantitative trait loci for FHB resistance were identified on chromosome 2D from AAC Tenacious; one of these loci on 2DS also colocated with loci for DTA and PHT. Another major locus for PHT, which cosegregates with locus for low DON, was also identified along with many minor and epistatic loci. QTL identified from AAC Tenacious may be useful to pyramid FHB resistance.

Fusarium head blight, a devastating cereal crop disease, can cause significant yield losses and contaminate grain with hazardous fungal toxins. Concerningly, recent evidence indicates that substantial grain protein content loss is likely to occur in wheat that is moderately resistant to head blight when it is grown at elevated CO2. Although wheat breeders in North America utilize a number of resistance sources and genes to reduce pathogen damage, the Fhb1 gene is widely deployed. To determine whether Fhb1 is associated with the protein content loss at elevated CO2, twelve near-isogenic spring wheat lines from either a susceptible or moderately susceptible genetic background, and with, or without the Fhb1 QTL, were grown at ambient and elevated CO2 conditions. The near-isogenic lines were evaluated for differences in physiology, productivity, and grain protein content. Our results showed that the Fhb1 QTL did not have any significant effect on plant growth, development, yield, or grain protein content at ambient or elevated CO2. Therefore, other factors in the moderately susceptible wheat genetic background are likely responsible for the more severe grain protein loss at elevated CO2.

Fusarium diseases of cereals, particularly wheat, are a persistent threat to food and feed safety and security. Apart from yield losses, the contamination of the crop with Fusarium mycotoxins is of great concern. Among other measures, the deployment of Fusarium-resistant cultivars plays a key role in integrated Fusarium control and the reduction of mycotoxin contamination in feed and food. In this review, genetic diversity for Fusarium resistance in wheat and its close relatives, evaluation methods for assessing quantitative resistance and tools for breeding Fusarium-resistant cultivars are presented and critically discussed.
