Genotypic characterization of dengue virus strains circulating during 2007-2009 in New Delhi

Abstract: Dengue is an important arboviral disease of tropical and subtropical regions, with significant morbidity and mortality. Dengue virus is antigenically classified into four serotypes, which are further classified into 4-5 genotypes based on their genetic diversity. Since genotypes vary in their virulence, their detection and analysis of spatial and temporal transition are essential. We utilized sequence information from the E-NS1 gene region for molecular and phylogenetic characterization of dengue viruses isola… Show more

“…We identified 2 patients with meningitis: 1 was infected with 2 DENV serotypes and the other with 3 DENV serotypes. We also report the circulation of the DENV-2 genotype Asian II in Brazil, where the DENV-2 genotype American/Asian has been the most prevalent genotype since 1990 ( 13 ). When and where genotype Asian II started to circulate in Brazil is unclear.…”

“…The DENV-2 isolates from samples from patients 557 and 571 grouped with isolates of Asian II, which is a genotype that consists of viruses circulating in China, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, and Vietnam ( 13 ). The American/Asian genotype has been the only genotype previously identified in Brazil, although some variations have occurred within this genotype ( 12 ) (Figure, panel B).…”

“…18 A postviral encephalomyelitis has also been reported in association with DENV that may rarely cause parkinsonism. 20,21 Prior to 2008, DENV-2 and -3 were predominant, with no DENV-1 genotype V in circulation; in 2009 DENV-2 and -3 were again the predominant circulating strains. To our knowledge, chronic DENV infection of the CNS has not been described.…”

“…19 Our patient had traveled repeatedly to regions endemic for DENV, but he had no history of acute encephalitis. 20 Sequence analysis of the virus present in the CNS at autopsy revealed an increase in nonsynonymous mutations in the envelope region as compared to other regions of the viral genome (Supplementary Table 4). Here, we demonstrate signs of DENV in the CNS causing a panencephalitis at time of death and at biopsy 33 months antemortem.…”

“…Vigilance over the years recorded its continued circulation in the following years [2,8]. However, with emergence of DENV-3 in 2003, a downward shift in predominance of DENV-2 occurred, and its spread narrowed to sporadic cases [3][4][5]14]. After being persistent at low key for nearly a decade, it emerged as predominant serotype in 2013 outbreak [6].…”
