Genotypic detection of Epstein-Barr Virus in pediatric transplant recipients from India

Abstract: EBV infection is the high risk factor for PTLD after liver transplantation. PCR targeting of EBV can be applied to diagnose EBV infections and monitor treatment for EBV in pediatric solid organ transplant recipients.

“…According to earlier Indian studies, keratoconjunctivitis patients had a HAdV positive rate ranging from 13.8% to 66.6% [11][12][13][14]. Similar observations were obtained in our study, conducted in Andaman, with a 24% incidence rate.…”

“…Viral infections are known to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing HSCT and Herpes virus are known to be among the most common viral infections in these patients (5). The iatrogenic suppression of T-cell with the immunosuppression of the transplant regimens, allows the proliferation of infected B cells (9). EBV is one of the most important viruses in transplanted patients, and monitoring of EBV DNA in peripheral blood is routinely performed in several transplant centers, since these patients have a higher-risk of developing complications (913).…”

“…In India, several outbreaks of EKC have been observed, with HAdV-8 being the most common causative agent [24], along with others like HAdV-6 and HAdV-2 [25]. In our previous published report based on sequencing the partial region of hexon we found the isolates to be closer to HAdV-54 than HAdV-8 phylogenetically [26].…”
