Genotyping bovine leukemia virus in dairy cattle of Heilongjiang, northeastern China

Abstract: Background Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) causes enzootic bovine leukosis in cattle and leads to heavy economic losses in the husbandry industry. Heilongjiang Province, China, is rich in dairy cattle. However, its current BLV epidemiology and genotypes have still not been evaluated and confirmed. In this report, we investigated the BLV epidemiology in dairy cattle in the major regions of Heilongjiang Province via the nested PCR assay. Results A total of 730 blood samples w… Show more

“…An ML phylogenetic tree was constructed using the best K2+I model of nucleotide substitution ( 33 ). The results of phylogenetic analysis were similar to those published in previous studies and BLV strains were classified into 11 genotypes ( 3 , 18 , 29 , 34 36 ), as shown in Figure 2 . Interestingly, our phylogenetic analysis also showed that the Egyptian BLV isolates were clustered into genotype-1 or -4.…”

“…In contrast to gp51, gp30 is poorly immunogenic ( 1 ) and therefore, BLV env- gp51 sequencing is mainly used for BLV phylogenetic studies ( 3 ). At least 11 BLV genotypes have been identified worldwide based on the phylogenetic analysis of env -gp51 sequences of BLV after identifying BLV genotype-11 in China ( 3 , 18 ). Three genotypes of BLV, namely genotype-1,-4, and-6, has been mainly detected worldwide ( 3 ).…”

“…However, most countries are still confronting the burden of BLV infection. Across Asian countries, BLV infection rate remains a wide range from 3.9% to 70% among Japan [ 29 ], Korea [ 19 ], China [ 42 , 43 ], Taiwan [ 41 ], Thailand [ 20 ], Philippines [ 32 ], Cambodia [ 24 ], Mongolia [ 28 ], Myanmar [ 31 ], and Vietnam [ 9 ].…”

“…The env gene encodes the envelope protein complex composing gp51 surface glycoprotein (SU) and gp30 transmembrane (TM) protein. As the env-gp51 plays an essential and indispensable role for viral life cycle and viral infectivity, such as cell entry and production of neutralizing antibodies [ 17 , 21 ], the env-gp51 gene had been widely become a target gene for diagnosis, molecular characterization and genotyping of BLV [ 12 , 19 , 20 , 32 , 34 , 43 ]. Based on the analysis of gp51 gene sequences, Rodriguez et al demonstrated that BLV strains can be classified into 7 distinct genotypes [ 39 ].…”

“…Bovine leukemia is a widespread viral pathology among livestock in many countries of the world. [1][2][3][4] The bovine leukemia virus (BLV) is able to suppress the general immune resistance of infected animals by destroying the genetic potential of the animals. One of the critical issues is the search and implementation of effective and affordable biologically active substances that increase immunological resistance and productive qualities in the leukemia control system.…”
