Geochemical Characteristics and Origin of Formation Water From the Upper Triassic Xujiahe Tight Sandstone in the Xiaoquan-Fenggu Structural Belt, Western Sichuan Depression, China

Abstract: Formation water represents an important driving force and carrier for the migration and accumulation of oil and gas; thus, research on its origin is a hot spot in petroleum geology. The Upper Triassic Xujiahe Formation in the Xiaoquan-Fenggu Structural Belt in the western Sichuan Depression, China, has developed thick tight sandstone gas reservoirs. However, previous studies have provided different conclusions on the origin of the formation water in the Xujiahe tight sandstone reservoir. In this paper, the ori… Show more

“…Given that migration and intermixing of reservoir waters differing in mineralization [62] occur in reservoir systems, it is logical to state that electric and magnetic fields arise consequently. The reservoir fluids move from the highest pressure areas to the lowest ones along the path of least resistance.…”

“…Theoretically containing up to 28.90% potassium (K 2 SO 4 ) in huge quantities, polyhalite is rich in essential mineral components such as potassium, magnesium, and sulfur. 1 Polyhalite is the most prevalent ore type in the Sichuan Basin of China, 2 which has a large amount, a thick layer of ore, and a high degree of enrichment. There are prospective reserves of over 10 billion tons of polyhalite ore (K 2 O equivalent) in the eastern Sichuan region alone.…”
