Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis has revealed extremely high abundances of rearranged hopanes in Jurassic source rocks and related crude oils in the center of the Sichuan Basin. The detected rearranged hopanes include 17α(H)-diahopanes (C 27 D and C 29−35 D), early-eluting rearranged hopanes (C 27 E and C 29−33 E), and 18α(H)-neohopanes (C 29 Ts and Ts). Both the 17α(H)-diahopanes and the early-eluting rearranged hopanes exhibit a distribution pattern similar to that of the 17α(H)-hopane series, with a predominance of the C 30 member and the presence of 22S and 22R epimers of hopanes in the extended series (>C 30 ). The results of this study show that the relatively high abundance of rearranged hopanes in Jurassic source rocks in the study area is associated with their depositional environments and with clay-mediated acidic catalysis rather than, as was previously thought, thermal maturity. Shallow lacustrine facies with brackish water and a suboxic to weak reducing sedimentary environment have contributed to the enrichment of rearranged hopanes, and clay-mediated acidic catalysis may also have had a positive influence on their abundance. The distribution patterns of the diahopane series indicate that the oils from Jurassic reservoirs in the Gongshanmiao Oilfield are sourced from Jurassic source rocks. Rearranged hopanes are therefore considered to be effective biomarkers for oil-source correlation in the center of the Sichuan Basin.

The Xiamaling Formation in the North China Block contains a well-preserved 1400 Ma sedimentary sequence with a low degree of thermal maturity. Previous studies have confirmed the dynamic and complex nature of this evolving marine setting, including the existence of an oxygen-minimum zone, using multi-proxy approaches, including iron speciation, trace metal dynamics, and organic geochemistry. Here, we investigate the prevailing redox conditions during diagenesis via the biomarkers of rearranged hopanes from the finely laminated sediments of the organic-rich black shales in Units 2 and 3 of the Xiamaling Formation. We find that rearranged hopanes are prominent in the biomarker composition of the oxygen-minimum zone sediment, which is completely different from that of the sediment in the overlying anoxic strata. Since the transition process from hopanes to rearranged hopanes requires oxygen via oxidation at the C-l6 alkyl position of 17α(H)-hopanes, we infer that dissolved oxygen led to the transformation of hopane precursors into rearranged hopanes during the early stages of diagenesis. The use of hopanoid hydrocarbons as biomarkers of marine redox conditions has rarely been previously reported, and the hydrocarbon signatures point towards oxic bottom waters during the deposition of Unit 3 of the Xiamaling Formation, which is consistent with the earlier oxygen-minimum zone environmental interpretation of this Unit.

Kazakhstan ranks as the 12th largest oil producer globally and boasts a diverse range of crude oils. This research introduces a method for distinguishing between the different types of crude oils based on biomarker analysis of 28 crude oils from Western and Southern Kazakhstan using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Biomarkers serve as valuable tools, especially in forensic investigations of oil spills. These biomarkers effectively retain a significant portion of the original natural product’s carbon structure, providing crucial evidence regarding the origin and identity of the oils under examination. This study identifies a set of biomarkers, including pristine, phytane, n-C17 and n-C18 alkanes, hopanes, bisnorhopanes, iso-copalanes, pregnane, androstane, allopregnane, homopregnane, cholestane, and stigmastane. By examining ratios such as pristane/phytane, pristane/n-C17 alkane, tricyclic/pentacyclic terpanes, and hopane, as well as the distribution of steranes, it was deduced that crude oils from West Kazakhstan exhibited resilience to biodegradation. These findings showed that gas chromatography-mass spectrometry is an effective method for oil biomarkers determination, especially because it provides efficient separation and identification. Additionally, this study delved into the origin conditions and maturity of these oils, contributing to a deeper understanding of their characteristics and analysis that is simple to use and available worldwide.
