Geochemical Composition of the Continental Crust in Korean Peninsula

Abstract: The chemical composition of the continental crust play an important role in understanding of crustal formation and evolution and quantifying other processes taking place within continental crust. We summarized geochemical data reported in the previous literature for the crustal rocks in the Korean Peninsula and divided their chemical composition into geologic time scale. In the variation diagram normalized by average composition of the upper crustal rocks, the geochemical characteristics of the upper crust dur… Show more

“…The zircon age data indicate that Jurassic to Triassic granites and Precambrian metamorphic rocks as the primary sources in the marginal areas where alluvial drainage systems transported sediment detritus from the adjacent source areas. These source rocks have similar characteristics in major element composition [57]. Thus, the proximal deposits show similar major element composition regardless of variations in the relative contribution of Jurassic to Triassic granites and Precambrian metamorphic rocks.…”

“…As lanthanoid REEs have fairly similar characteristics, they reflect the differentiation process of the materials of origin of rocks, as they behave predictably in several different environments on Earth. Compatible and incompatible elements underlie the geochemical characteristics of the original rocks formed from magma [22,23]. Examining the homogeneity between stones by comparing the compositional contents of REE, as well as compatible and incompatible elements with previously studied standard values, is a well-known method that has already been applied to various stone cultural heritage including tomb remains [8,9,[24][25][26][27][28].…”
