A demonstration project for the geological storage of CO 2 is currently being considered in the deep Precipice Sandstone formation of the Surat Basin, Queensland, Australia. Because of the presence of potential fresh water resources in this formation, a reservoir-scale two-dimensional reactive-transport model was developed to assess temporal and spatial changes in water quality imposed by co-injecting CO 2 with SO 2 , NO 2 , and O 2 at this location. The model shows that because the injection rate is low (60 tons/year), flow is buoyancy-dominated and under these conditions the predicted CO 2 flow pattern is quite sensitive to fine-scale heterogeneities and the resolution of the numerical mesh. The model also shows that SO 2 and NO 2 readily partition into the aqueous phase in close vicinity of their injection point, lowering pH somewhat beyond the acidification from CO 2 dissolution. Only O 2 under redox disequilibrium conditions is modeled to persist in the CO 2 plume away from the injection point, however at sub-ppm levels. This modeling effort demonstrates acidification near the wellbore due to the preferential stripping of gas impurities, and accumulation of CO 2 around a lithostratigraphic boundary above the target formation, where relatively rapid mineral dissolution (muscovite, chlorite and calcite) and precipitation (ankerite, kaolinite and chalcedony) occur.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) has been identified as an urgent, strategic and essential approach to reduce anthropogenic CO2 emissions, and mitigate the severe consequences of climate change. CO2 storage is the last step in the CCS chain and can be implemented mainly through oceanic and underground geological sequestration, and mineral carbonation. This review paper aims to provide state-of-the-art developments in CO2 storage. The review initially discussed the potential options for CO2 storage by highlighting the present status, current challenges and uncertainties associated with further deployment of established approaches (such as storage in saline aquifers and depleted oil and gas reservoirs) and feasibility demonstration of relatively newer storage concepts (such as hydrate storage and CO2-based enhanced geothermal systems). The second part of the review outlined the critical criteria that are necessary for storage site selection, including geological, geothermal, geohazards, hydrodynamic, basin maturity, and economic, societal and environmental factors. In the third section, the focus was on identification of CO2 behaviour within the reservoir during and after injection, namely injection-induced seismicity, potential leakage pathways, and long-term containment complexities associated with CO2-brine-rock interaction. In addition, a detailed review on storage capacity estimation methods based on different geological media and trapping mechanisms was provided. Finally, an overview of major CO2 storage projects, including their overall outcomes, were outlined. This review indicates that although CO2 storage is a technically proven strategy, the discussed challenges need to be addressed in order to accelerate the deployment of the technology. In addition, beside the necessity of technoeconomic aspects, public acceptance of CO2 storage plays a central role in technology deployment, and the current ethical mechanisms need to be further improved.

This chapter is divided into three main parts: (1) governing processes in multiphase multicomponent flow and reactive transport (MMF&RT), (2) mathematical and numerical approaches of MMF&RT modeling, and (3) applications with respect to CO 2 storage. Thereafter, discussion of other applications that illustrate the ability of existing methods to represent general non-ideal multicomponent gaseous systems within a wide range of temperature and pressure conditions, in addition to their possible interactions with water/brine/rock, are presented. GOVERNING PROCESSES The governing processes and present issues of multiphase flow and geochemical modeling are introduced in this section. The definition of wettability is first presented, which is difficult for several systems; followed by the definitions of capillary pressure, residual and capillary trapping, and heterogeneity. In addition, the relative permeability is introduced, which is a characteristic property of multiphase flow. Recently, novel experimental and numerical technologies have provided further insight into different concepts such as residual nonwetting saturation, maximum relative permeability, governing forces, hysteresis, the impact of heterogeneity, and upscaling from pore-and core-scales. The different regimes of gas diffusion are then discussed in conjunction with corresponding modeling methods. Thereafter, basic formulations of multiphase flow are presented, from immiscible to compositional flows.
