“…Since surface alteration does not seem to have significantly affected the VVP xenoliths, these peculiarities might reflect processes occurred in their mantle source, likely pointing to recycling of a slab-derived component with a significant pelagic sediment signature (Hawkesworth et al, 1994;Elliott et al, 1997;Kogiso et al, 1997;Green and Adam, 2003). It might imply that the VVP subcontinental mantle was also affected by metasomatic agents released by a subducting plate, e.g., the European slab (subduction-related metasomatism) (Rosenbaum et al, 1997;Downes, 2001;Downes et al, 2002). Overlapping of metasomatic processes, e.g., OIB-and slab-type, is in agreement with both the lack of Rb troughs even in samples showing geochemical patterns comparable to HIMU-OIB (VVP lavas) and the occurrence of Ti negative anomalies within the whole suite of xenoliths.…”

“…1), spinel peridotites consist of lherzolites and harzburgites, with subordinate dunites and wehrlites, which may contain phlogopite, amphibole, and carbonate. Downes et al (2002) Nd ~ 0.5121) isotopic signatures close to those of the host ultrapotassic rocks and have been suggested to represent the metasomatic veins whose melting gave ultrapotassic magmas (Conticelli, 1998).…”

“…The debate has focussed on two main possible genetic mechanisms: a) within-plate origin partial melting of an up-rising mantle plume (e.g., Vollmer & Hawkesworth, 1981;Vollmer, 1989;Ayuso et al, 1998;Castorina et al, 2000;Gasperini et al, 2002;Bell et al, 2004Bell et al, , 2013; b) orogenic to post-orogenic partial melting of the sub-continental lithospheric metasomatised mantle at a destructive plate margin, with contributions from recycled sediments (e.g., Peccerillo, 1985Peccerillo, , 1999Peccerillo, , 2001Peccerillo, , 2005aRogers et al, 1986;Beccaluva et al, 1991;Conticelli & Peccerillo, 1992;Downes et al, 2002;Conticelli et al, 2004Conticelli et al, , 2007Conticelli et al, , 2015aBianchini et al, 2008). Some of the authors suggesting a within-plate origin also point out the need for an increasing influence of an upper crustal geochemical component northward, although no convincing reasons have been provided to explain…”
