The Miocene volcanic-intrusive complex in the Slovenský Raj Mountains, middle Slovakia, comprises a swarm of subalkaline basalts and basaltic andesites with alkaline basalts, trachybasalts and basaltic trachyandesites. Basaltic to doleritic feeder dykes and sporadic hyaloclastite lavas are exposed in contact with the Triassic Bódvaszilas Formation of the Silica Nappe. The primary clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and Fe-Ti oxide assemblage also contains calcite spheroids inferred to represent carbonatitic melt. These spheroids are associated with subsolidus chlorite, actinolite, magnetite, titanite, calcite, and epidote. Micropoikilitic clinopyroxene, albite, and Ti-magnetite formed due to rapid quenching. There was an incorporation of host rock carbonate during the eruption. The erupted products are the result of magmatic differentiation of the parental basaltic tholeiitic magma with a redox of ∆QFM = +1 to +3, affected by varying degrees of 0%–50% fractionation and the assimilation of carbonate material in a shallow magmatic reservoir. REE geochemistry shows N-MORB-like type patterns with both LaN/YbN and LaN/SmN < 1 at near constant Eu/Eu* (~0.9). This is supported by εNd(t=13 Ma) values of +8.0 to +7.4 determined from the basaltic rocks. The REE values can be modeled by 1% fractional melting of garnet peridotite mixed with 7% melting of spinel peridotite of PM composition (1:9 proportions). SIMS and LA-ICP-MS U/Pb analysis of zircons yields a concordant age of 12.69 ± 0.24 Ma and a 13.3 ± 0.16 Ma intercept (Serravallian) age. The Middle Miocene volcanic activity was related to subduction-collision processes along the boundary of the Cenozoic ALCAPA (Alps–Carpathians–Pannonia) microplate and the southern margin of the European plate.

Geochemical and petrological data are reported for phonolites of the Lužické hory Mts. in the northeastern part of the Ohře (Eger) Rift near the junction with the Lusatian Fault. The phonolites of the Lužické hory Mts. are enriched in incompatible trace elements such as Rb, REEs, Zr, Hf, U, Th, Nb, Ta and volatile components such as F and Cl. The phonolites are significantly impoverished in Ti and P and partly also in Sr and Ba contents. The K-Ar dating of phonolites provided scattered ages in the range of 34.2 ± 1.4 to 26.7 ± 1.1 Ma. Two geochemically different phonolite types were recognized. Phonolites of type A (higher Sr > 90 ppm, Ba > 130 ppm) have following initial Sr–Nd isotope characteristics: 87Sr/86Sr = 0.7032–0.7094; εNd = 3.0–3.4, similar to those known from phonolites of the nearby České středohoří Mts. Prevailing phonolites of type B (lower Sr < 20 ppm, Ba < 60 ppm) are decoupled and show a broad range of initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (up to 0.7142) at narrow εNd (3.2–3.9). Both phonolite types are characterized by relatively restricted variations in 206Pb/204Pb (19.2–19.5), 207Pb/204Pb (15.61–15.66) and 208Pb/204Pb (39.07–39.30), indicating their derivation from a similarly metasomatically enriched mantle source. The geochemical characteristics of the phonolites can associate with various (i) lower and higher clinopyroxene and feldspar crystallization of primary basanitic magma, (ii) degree of assimilation-fractional crystallization (AFC) processes during the magma ascent, and/or (iii) late-magmatic to post-magmatic hydrothermal contribution of incompatible elements.

Post-Variscan lamprophyres of the Bohemian Massif hold the potential for the understanding of deep-mantle processes beneath the Bohemian Massif in association with mantle metasomatism as a consequence of Variscan subduction and Late Palaeozoic extension in Central Europe and tectonic processes between Variscan blocks. Two principal types of post-Variscan lamprophyres occur in the Bohemian Massif, contrasting in their age and composition: ultramafic lamprophyres of Late Cretaceous to Palaeocene age and alkaline lamprophyres of Mid Eocene to Late Oligocene age. Combination of published and new whole-rock, isotope (Sr-Nd-Pb) and radiometric (K/Ar) data on lamprophyres of both types (including new data from samples from the deep boreholes) significantly contributes to the understanding of the changing tectonomagmatic position of post-Variscan volcanism in the Bohemian Massif. The striking shift in lamprophyre geochemistry is paralleled by a change in their structural position from the initial pre-rift period of volcanism to the developed syn-rift period and the related change in their mantle sources beneath the Bohemian Massif. The Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic volcanism is explained as related to lithospheric flexuring during the Alpine orogeny, resulting in an asthenospheric upwelling, or associated with the lithosphere deformation and perturbation of the thermal boundary layer.Supplementary material at https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.c.5277861
