Triassic dryland fluvial systems occur infilling extensional and post-rift basins across northwest Europe. These systems were deposited by streams draining off the major basin margin catchments of Greenland, Fennoscandia, the Scottish Highlands and the remnant Variscan mountains. Fluvial drainage was dominantly endorheic in character, and terminated in playa, aeolian dune, sabkha or marsh settings. Whilst the ambient basin climate fluctuated through varying levels of aridity and humidity, the dispersal of sand into these basins was critically dependant on catchment run-off from the major, basin flanking regions. In the Early Triassic the Tethyan monsoon drove seasonal precipitation over the Variscan mountains which transported sediment northward into arid dune fields and playa. In addition, far-travelled fluvial systems supplied sediment from distant, wetter catchments. Through the Middle and Late Triassic the effects of the Tethyan monsoon apparently weakened, and sand-prone fluvial systems draining off the Variscan mountains were more limited in areal extent, but expanded during pluvial episodes. However, Greenland and Fennoscandia maintained sediment supply from the north, with perennial run-off from Fennoscandia able to maintain marshes and levels of vegetation cover not encountered elsewhere in the region and to episodically drive major exorheic drainage systems into the Tethys Sea. Published climatic simulations are consistent with these observations, which indicate that Greenland, and particularly Fennoscandia, had precipitation levels higher than the regions to the south with a positive precipitation: evaporation balance.

The study of fluid inclusions in Lower Triass ic Rot halite from the Rockensussra 2/83 borehole in northern Germany showe d the presence ofprimary and second ary gas-liquid inclusions. The gas phase in inclus ions indicates their stretching due to sa lt overheating at some postsedimentary stage . The homogenization temperature of inclusions indicates 'the overheating temperature of about 60-70°C. The overheating is additionally indicated by trails of migration oflarge secondary inclus ions occurring inside chevrons. The major-ion (K, Mg and 804) composition of inclusion brines was established with the use of ultra microchemical analysis (UMCA). The results of chemical analyses of brines of primary inclusions in halite from the Rockensussra 2/83 borehole confirm the earlier results for the Rot halite from the Netherlands and Poland. The bromin e content in halite is 78-107 ppm , supporting thus marine origin of halite. Brines ofprimary gas-liquid inclusions are thus representative samples of trapped evaporite wa ter and they may be used for the reconstruction ofthe composition ofEarly Triassic seawater. The comparison' of our analytical data with the earlier published data and models of chemical composition of seawater during the Phane rozoic which were constructed with the use of the BMW computer program makes it possible to conclude that the Early Triassic seawater was of the S04-rich type and consid ering the ratios ofmajor ions it fully corresponded to the Early Permian (Asselian-Sakmarian) seawater. It differed from the present seawater by a slight decre ase of Na and Mg ions, a considerable decrease ofS0 4 ion (by 31%) and an increase ofCa ion (by 36%).

We studied veins in the Triassic Buntsandstein of the Lower Saxony Basin (NW Germany) with the aim of quantifying the evolution of in-situ stress, fluids and material transport. Different generations of veins are observed. The first generation formed in weakly consolidated rocks without a significant increase in fracture permeability and was filled syntectonically with fibrous calcite and blocky to elongate-blocky quartz. The stable isotopic signature (d 18 O and d 13 C) indicates that the calcite veins precipitated from connate water at temperatures of 55-122°C. The second vein generation was syntectonically filled with blocky anhydrite, which grew in open fractures. Fluid inclusions indicate that the anhydrite veins precipitated at a minimum temperature of 150°C from hypersaline brines. Based on d 34 S measurements, the source of the sulphate was found in the underlying Zechstein evaporites. The macro-and microstructures indicate that all veins were formed during subsidence and that the anhydrite veins were formed under conditions of overpressure, generated by inflation rather than non-equilibrium compaction. The large amount of fluids which are formed by the dehydrating gypsum in the underlying Zechstein and are released into the Buntsandstein during progressive burial form a likely source of overpressures and the anhydrite forming fluids.
