Geochemistry of sands along the San Nicolás and San Carlos beaches, Gulf of California, Mexico: implications for provenance and tectonic setting

Abstract: Th, P, and Hf were immobile and Cu, Cr, and Zn were mobile during alteration processes. However, Torres-Alvarado et al. (2007) recently studied the effect of hydrothermal alteration on the chemistry of volcanic rocks from the Los Azufres geothermal field, Mexico, and found that most major elements and a few trace elements, including high field strength elements such as Zr, Ti, and P, were mobilized during hydrothermal alteration. They cautioned against the use of these elements for petrogenetic studies of igne… Show more

“…Geochemistry of sedimentary rocks is influenced by hydraulic sorting, which controls the distribution of some trace elements (Armstrong‐Altrin, Nagarajan, Lee, & Kasper‐Zubillaga, ). Sc is concentrated in mafic components, and Zr is concentrated in zircon.…”

“…Recently, these diagrams were evaluated by ArmstrongAltrin (2015) and identified a good functioning of these diagrams for discriminating the tectonic of setting of older sedimentary basins. Similarly, these diagrams were used in recent studies to discriminate the tectonic setting of a source region, based on sediment geochemistry (Armstrong-Altrin et al 2014;Zaid and Gahtani 2015). These new discriminant-functionbased major-element diagrams (Fig.…”

“…The major element-based provenance discriminant function diagram of Roser and Korsch (1988) is frequently used by many researchers to identify the provenance of terrigenous sediments (Hofer et al 2013;Khanchuk et al 2013;Vdacny et al 2013) and to reflect the source rock composition (Shadan and Hosseini-Barzi 2013;Armstrong-Altrin et al 2014). This discriminant function diagram favors a felsic source for RG sands and intermediate source for AS sands (Fig.…”
