Geodiversity, Geoconservation, and Geotourism in Central America

Abstract: Central America is located in a dynamic region where tectonics and volcanism together with the tropical climate and its diverse vegetation have shaped the landscapes. Our main objective is to review the status of the geodiversity, geoconservation, and geotourism in Central America. We will identify the region’s geomorphic environments and geodiversity using classic regional geomorphology mapping techniques. Likewise, using touristic maps and webpages, we identify the most prominent geosites of different origin… Show more

“…COVID-19 and ongoing multifaceted challenges (cascading disasters) continuously tests almost every natural and human system, with a disproportionate degree of pressure place on the tourism and travel industries ( Altshuler and Schmidt, 2021 ). Costa Rica deeply relies in the touristic industry, representing roughly the 6% of the national Gross Domestic Product ( Quesada-Román et al, 2022a ). A plethora of social inequalities related to the access to key public services were evident during the pandemic in Costa Rica (Espinoza-Cisneros et al, 2022).…”

“…By highlighting the geological value of a site, geotourism can enhance visitor experiences and foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Earth's history. In recent decades, geotourism has emerged as a dynamic concept that has experienced significant growth [12] and promoted economic growth in parallel with promoting natural and cultural heritage [13]. Geotourism is characterized as a type of tourism that emphasizes the natural environment and geological aspects of an area.…”
