Geoelectric Investigation for Groundwater Exploration in Yaoundé Area, Cameroon

Abstract: Yaounde zone is originally characterized by the small number of aquifers and bad renewal capacity. Within the framework of the emergency program which aims at supplying the city with drinking water, seventeen Vertical Electrical Soundings (VES) were carried out using Schlumberger configuration in parts of Yaounde (latitude 3˚-5˚N and longitude 11˚-13˚E) to determine the nature and thickness of aquifer zone and necessary geoelectrical parameters. Four to five geoelectric layers were delineated from the survey a… Show more

“…Ground geophysical surveys of IP/chargeability and resistivity are routinely used for a wide range of applications, ranging from environmental pollution studies (e.g. oil spills), lithology variation, hydrology in locating aquifers [17,18] to mineral exploration. However the effectiveness of these geophysical techniques in exploration are enhanced when integrated with geochemical and geological data [19] which define the target of investigation.…”

“…The progressive population growth has led to severe shortage of potable water for the area. This poses as a great challenge to both the citizens and the Government [1]. Thus, the inadequate supply of potable water in the area has been a chronic problem.…”

“…The inventory of the shallow-dug wells revealed a depth range of 2.40-14.10 m with a mean value of 6.65 ± 2.47 m and a static water level of 1.55-13.12 m with a mean value of 5.89 ± 2.35 m. The occurrence of groundwater is controlled by a number of factors such as type of parent rock, depth, extent and pattern of weathering, the sand/clay ratio and the degree of fracturing, fissuring and jointing [18,19].…”
