Geographic Distribution of the Hearing Aid Dispensing Workforce: A Teleaudiology Planning Assessment for Arizona

Abstract: Purpose: Teleaudiology helps connect patients in rural and underresourced areas to hearing health care providers, minimizing the barrier of geography (Swanepoel et al., 2010). In the United States, teleaudiology is at the initial site data, and hearing aid dispensing workforce (defined as audiologists and hearing instrument specialists licensed to dispense hearing aids in Arizona). “…There is a shortage of audiological professionals around the world (Kamenov et al 2021), and the COVID-19 pandemic has further amplified the difficulties experienced by CI recipients accessing CI services (Ayas et al 2020). Currently, audiology services are concentrated in densely populated areas and teleaudiology can serve as a great way to provide access to patients living at a distance from the treatment center (Coco et al 2018).…”

As the United States population ages and the prevalence of hearing loss increases, the demand for hearing healthcare professionals will rise.…”

“…The PART application has already been used successfully to collect data both in the laboratory [ 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ] and remotely with participant-owned equipment in their own homes [ 15 , 16 ]. Currently in the United States, the limited availability of hearing healthcare professionals relative to the number of people with hearing loss limits access to hearing healthcare, particularly in rural areas—a gap that will be exacerbated by the projected growth of the aging population [ 17 , 18 , 19 ]. The use of portable technologies such as PART can improve access to hearing healthcare for patients who have difficulty traveling to the clinic and will allow research investigators to recruit and test a more diverse population of study participants [ 18 , 19 ].…”
