Geographic Information System and tools of spatial analysis in a pneumococcal vaccine trial

Abstract: BackgroundThe goal of this Geographic Information System (GIS) study was to obtain accurate information on the locations of study subjects, road network and services for research purposes so that the clinical outcomes of interest (e.g., vaccine efficacy, burden of disease, nasopharyngeal colonization and its reduction) could be linked and analyzed at a distance from health centers, hospitals, doctors and other important services. The information on locations can be used to investigate more accurate crowdedness… Show more

“…Only 142 children were partially vaccinated (e.g., received <3 doses) and these children were included in the intent-to-treat (ITT) analyses, but not the per-protocol (PP) results that we present here. The geographic location of each child's household of residence was collected using handheld GPS (24). We linked these geographic data to the study population in a geographic information system (GIS).…”

“…Data management team personnel, particularly the statisticians, were still available part time until 2009, when the main trial results were published [ 3 ]. An additional study of the geographic locations of children’s homes and services in the study area took place in years 2008–2009 with core members of the data management team [ 10 ]. Because of the skills that had been acquired, the local data management team was able to apply to this and other new research projects that had hired them.…”

“…The geographic location of each child's household of residence, along with other demographic information, was collected with geographic positioning systems (GPS) by trained health personnel from November 2008 to June 2009 . The birthplace for 383 children could not be found.…”
