The farms in the Uskopaljska valley were practically family property and heritage. That has changed in the last three decades. For the purposes of this paper, we conducted a special survey among farmers to find out the most important characteristics of their farm. The results showed that of the total number of farms participating in the survey, about 71% were not older than 25 years. The concentration of the population has led to a fragmentation of the farms and an increase in the number of mixed households. The large mountainous parts of the Uskopaljska valley region are characterized by the abandonment and alienation of entire agricultural farms, especially after 1991. The average size of the farm is less than 3 ha. Dwarf farms with a size up to 1 ha and a share of 48% dominate, which is 11% more than in 1981. Field surveys as well as cadastral map analysis indicate that the land parcels in the valley are usually 15 to 35 ares in size. We have also evaluated the parceling of agricultural land in the Uskopaljska valley by cadastral municipalities in order to draw the best possible conclusions about the agrarian structure.

This article discusses changing trends in agricultural land use in Uskopaljska valley. Quite a large number of agricultural land exploitation orientations indicate that the geographical benefits for the development of certain types of agricultural production are very different. Detailed analysis of the exploitation orientations of land use leads to the opinion that they are determined mainly by social movements. The depopulation areas are numerous in the periphery of Uskopaljska valley, resulting in abandonment of agricultural land and an increase in unused areas. Large extensive production areas were abandoned after 1991, leaving uncultivated ploughlands and grass cover to be used occasionally by herders. In 2018, there were only 7.4 acres of ploughlands, I–IV class quality, per person that were mainly being cultivated, which was not enough to ensure sufficient food production. According to the analysis of available data and based on the practices, and among others a survey among the farmers, the general perception of basic conditions and main problems of agricultural land use and agricultural development is revealed.

The transport system is a crucial component of economic development in any country. Bosnia and Herzegovina, being a country with a diverse topography, faces unique challenges and opportunities in its transport system. This paper examines the potential challenges and opportunities of the transport system in Bosnia and Herzegovina and its role in economic development. Using a qualitative research approach, we conduct an in‐depth analysis of existing literature and collect primary data through semi‐structured interviews with key stakeholders in the transport industry in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Our findings indicate that the transport system in Bosnia and Herzegovina faces significant challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, lack of modernization, limited investment, and weak institutional framework. However, there are opportunities for the development of the transport system including its strategic location as a transit hub, potential for infrastructure improvements, and its unique natural resources that can be leveraged for tourism and sustainable development. The development of the transport system can also lead to increased trade and investment, job creation, and improved social welfare. To fully realize the potential of the transport system in Bosnia and Herzegovina, policymakers and stakeholders need to work together to address the challenges and leverage the opportunities. This paper provides policy recommendations for improving the transport system, including investment in infrastructure, modernization of the transport sector, institutional strengthening, and the promotion of sustainable development. The findings of this study have significant implications for the economic development of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and countries with similar challenges and opportunities in the transport sector.
