Geographical pathways for SME internationalization: insights from an Italian sample

Abstract: Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to examine the determinants of two distinct geographic pathways to internationalization for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Regional and global pathways are juxtaposed to study the influence on export performance of selected key intangible resources, namely, innovation, human resource management, networking and the firm's experience. Design/methodology/approach -Building upon a resource-based view of the firm, Tobit regression models are used to test the hypothe… Show more

“…This is the case even after other resource effects are allowed for: firms are more likely to overcome the liability of foreignness if they have stayed in export markets longer. In addition, the probability of exit increases with age, complementing recent findings that age has a negative effect on exporting performance (D'Angelo, Majocchi, Zucchella, & Buck, 2013).…”

“…Some studies still use firm age as a proxy for the duration of firms' internationalization (e.g., Majocchi, Bacchiocchi, & Mayrhofer, 2005;D'Angelo et al, 2013), implicitly assuming that age automatically reflects international experience. However, we find strong evidence that while firm age is positively associated with the likelihood of exit, the length of time a firm has been exporting has a highly negative effect on the probability of export exit: in addition, age has no effect on the likelihood of re-entry, while the length of time out of exporting is strongly inversely correlated with re-entry.…”

“…Actuando estos factores, en ocasiones, como mediadores o moderadores de la relación valores-resultados empresariales. Por ejemplo, se ha demostrado la influencia positiva de la inversión en nuevos productos y contratar a personal ajeno a la familia de los propietarios como factores que influyen positivamente en los resultados exportadores de las empresas (D'angelo, Majocchi, Zucchella, & Buck, 2013). Esta limitación constituye una guía para orientar futuros trabajos de investigación.…”

“…Conclusive remarks are incorporated in the final section of the study. Different authors agree that geographic proximity is worth the attention that it gets for it enables collaboration, innovation (Letaifa and Rabeau 2013;Boschma et al 2013;Castellani et al 2013;D'Este et al 2013;Maskell 2014) and knowledge sharing (Crespo et al 2014;D'Angelo et al 2013). In addition, social networks are analyzed to understand their relationship with innovations (Casanueva 2013;Letaifa and Rabeau 2013), production (Carswell 2013) and knowledge sharing (Lorenzen and Mudambi 2013).…”

“…Different methods are applied in order to analyze qualitative and quantitative data, such as correlation and regression analysis (Casanueva et al 2013;Lai et al 2014;Tavassoli, Carbonara 2014;Crespo et al 2014;D'Angelo et al 2013), gravitation model (Castellani et al 2013), case analysis (Ben Lafeita and Rabeu 2013;Boschma et al 2013;Bouncken and Kraus 2013;Carswell 2013;Lorenzen, Mudambi 2013;Tokatli 2013;Dobusch and Schussler 2013;Morrison et al 2013) or literature analysis (Crane et al 2014;D'Agostino et al 2013;Maskell 2014;Feldman 2014;D'Este et al 2013;Ketels 2013). The problem of providing the most effective way to evaluate the data of different phenomena, which are mentioned in clusters' studies, could be by performing a quantitative evaluation of clusters' performance ).…”
