Geographical variations in maternal lifestyles during pregnancy associated with congenital heart defects among live births in Shaanxi province, Northwestern China

Abstract: In this study, we aimed to explore regional differences in maternal lifestyle during pregnancy related to congenital heart defects (cHD) in Shaanxi province, northwestern china. A large-scale epidemiologic survey of birth defects among infants born during 2010-2013, was conducted in Shaanxi province. non-spatial and geographic weighted logistic regression models were used for analysis. the spatial model indicated that passive smoking frequency was positively associated with CHD for 43.3% of participants (P < 0… Show more

“…Known maternal lifestyle risks include smoking 18–20 during the first trimester of pregnancy, which has also been associated with a ≥30% increased risk of the following lesions in the fetus: ASD, pulmonary valvar stenosis, truncus arteriosus, TGA, 21 and septal defects (particularly for heavy smokers [≥25 cigarettes daily]). 22…”

“…Maternal alcohol intake of >1 drink per week has been correlated with CCDs. 20 Maternal binge drinking and the combination of binge drinking and smoking can be particularly deleterious: Mothers who smoke and report any binge drinking in the 3 months before pregnancy may be at increased risk of giving birth to a child with a CCD compared with mothers who report only any binge drinking (aOR, 12.65 [95% CI, 3.5–45.2] versus 9.45 [95% CI, 2.5–35.3]). 23…”

“…In recent years, spatial epidemiology has been widely used in the study of the relationship between environment and health, and plays a very significant role in the field of public health 12,13 . It has shown that the prevalence of BD is closely related to geographical location 14,15 . The prevalence of BD in Guangxi is about 1%, higher than most other provinces of China, and varies greatly in different regions 16,17 .…”
