Geography of Africa biomedical publications: An analysis of 1996–2005 PubMed papers

Abstract: Background: Scientific publications play an important role in scientific process providing a key linkage between knowledge production and use. Scientific publishing activity worldwide over the past decades shows that most countries in Africa have low levels of publication. We sought to examine trends and contribution of different Africa subregions and individual countries as represented by the articles indexed by PubMed between 1996 and 2005.

“…Libya did not appear in the top 20 African countries when the total number and the average annual number of biomedical publications were counted for each African country from 1996 to 2005. 8 Also, in the same study Libya was not ranked among the top 20 countries in Africa when the number of biomedical publications was normalized to annual publication rate per million inhabitants. 8 Libya ranked lower than Morocco, Tunisia and Yemen in total number of PubMed publications between 2002 and 2006.…”

“…The free access to PubMed and its friendly interface have led to the development of elaborate techniques to analyze global trends for biomedical research productivity and provide objective and useful tools to evaluate the results of scientific activity in different locations worldwide (7,(8)(9)(10). To the best of our knowledge, most of these studies required manual checks at the data collection phase for the quality of the data collected.…”

“…Tijssen (2007) asserted that peer-reviewed scholarly and professional journals are one of the very few internationally comparative sources of information on scientific outputs. Uthman and Uthman, (2007) stated that scholarly publications play an important role in scientific process by providing a key linkage between knowledge production and use. They are vital for knowledge sharing, dissemination of research findings and career advancement of academics.…”

“…Africa lags behind other regions of the world in scientific research and needs large investment to catch up with other developing countries such as India and Brazil. However, South Africa has consistently produced more biomedical research output than other African countries (Uthman and Uthman, 2007;Tijssen, 2007;Hofman et al, 2009). …”
