Geography of Production Linkages in the Irish and Scottish Microcomputer Industry: The Role of Logistics

Abstract: Abstract:The economic crisis of the mid-1970s marked the transition from the traditional Fordist mode of industrial organization to one of time-based competition (TBC). It has been postulated that the rise of TBC will lead to an increase in local and regional production linkages. Part of the argument is that the associated search for logistical efficiency and the adoption of the just-in-time (JIT) principles will lead to closer buyer-supplier proximity. In this article, we test the relevance of this idea in a … Show more

“…First, the globalization of production networks has made the management of supply chains much more complex, but also a potentially more important source of competitive advantage (Van Egeraat and Jacobson, 2005). Dell, for instance, sources the components of laptops from many different countries; but its ability to quickly integrate those components and deliver the finished product thousands of kilometers away in fewer than 10 days gives the company an edge versus less nimble rivals (Holzner, 2006).…”

“…A considerable body of literature has shown that foreign corporations fail to generate both local and regional success (Phelps et al 2003;Pavlínek 2004;Egeraat and Jacobson 2005). This failure not only affects the performance of business services but also influences the geographical distribution of highskilled and knowledge workers (Guzik and Micek 2008).…”

“…He identified negative effects of FDI on local and regional economic development and argued that the central European economies dependent on FDI are becoming more vulnerable to plant closures if local currencies appreciate rapidly or local wages increase substantially. Egeraat and Jacobson (2005) showed that multinational plants of the software industry are weakly embedded in the regional economies of Ireland and Scotland. They argued that a strategy for the microcomputer industry is becoming increasingly unstable in Ireland and Scotland.…”

“…van Egeraat and Jacobson (2005) studied the production and distribution of computers in Scotland and Ireland. In this case, several parts suppliers have consolidated their distribution centers into one or two massive hubs close to the assembly plant.…”
