Geography's secret powers to save the world

Abstract: The purpose of this paper, prepared to present at the 2018 joint Canadian Association of Geographers (CAG) and International Geographical Union (IGU) regional conference, is to suggest three strategies, framed as proposals, that geography and geography education can deploy to “save the world.” The first proposal is to expand explicit instruction in spatial thinking to close gender‐based achievement gaps. The second proposal is to apply research from the learning sciences to develop persuasive geography curricu… Show more

“…Sandra Bednarz (2019) wants nothing more than for geographic educators to "Save the World" and in a presentation to the 2018 joint Canadian Association of Geographers (CAG) and IGU Regional Conference, she suggested that Geographers have three unique "secret geographic powers" that enable them to help students save the world through Geography by developing a sense of self, civic consciousness, and social responsibility (p.2). By "secret" Bednarz (2019) means that Geography teachers routinely use three distinct, but equally powerful, ways of thinking that differentiate Geography from other disciplines. This methodology is considered secret because they do not advertise it to school administration, and it is not recognized or understood by the public (Bednarz, 2019).…”

“…By "secret" Bednarz (2019) means that Geography teachers routinely use three distinct, but equally powerful, ways of thinking that differentiate Geography from other disciplines. This methodology is considered secret because they do not advertise it to school administration, and it is not recognized or understood by the public (Bednarz, 2019). These secret powers include: Spatial Thinking, using maps, graphs, and diagrams to visualize and interpret data about space; Geographic Thinking, using geography and observation to reason out or understand spatial effects and the processes that produce them; and Geo-spatial Thinking, applying spatial thinking using geospatial technologies (Bednarz, 2019).…”

“…Uhlenwinkel et al 2017). In my understanding, geography has the ability to teach values that are important in helping students to appreciate the diverse and complex world around them, where everyone has the opportunity to take a stance and actively participate (see also Bednarz 2019).…”

“…When we talk about geography education, it is important to consider value-based aims (see e.g. Bednarz 2019;Uhlenwinkel et al 2017). This thesis aimed to increase our theoretical understanding by differentiating and adding a sixth knowledge type to Maude's typology, because it found that geography teachers teach geographical knowledge that engages students to learn in relation to the broader educational aims of schooling (see Table 8, column 1).…”
