Geological engineering criteria for deep solids injection

Abstract: Muhammad Nadeem received his B.S. degree in geology and his M.S. degree in petroleum geology from University of the Punjab, Pakistan, and his M.S. degree in earth sciences from the University of Waterloo, studying the geological and geotechnical issues of deep waste injection. He is currently working with Focus Energy Trust in Calgary.

“…The semi-quantitative approach was then applied to develop a better understanding and to extract a numeric score for the ranking of the formation as a SFI target zone (Table 1). The cumulative weighted score of the Zubair Formation in southern Kuwait is 145.5 (Table 1) which qualifies it as an above-average target formation for SFI, in comparison to the cases discussed elsewhere (Nadeem and Dusseault, 2007).…”

“…In the weighting approach, a numerical weighting factor is applied to each parameter used in the screening process depending on its importance in SFI. The method proposed by Nadeem and Dusseault (2007) to determine appropriate weights is adopted and modified for this study (Table 1).…”

“…Excess water enters into regional formation water flow, where contaminants are adsorbed on clay minerals. Following a few simple rules for site selection (Nadeem and Dusseault, 2007) and operation (Reed et al, 2002), exceptional environmental security can be achieved with risk levels many orders of magnitude less than landfills and other methods of near-surface storage. Deep biosolids injection not only treats or isolates noxious bioagents and chemicals, methane co-generation and solid carbon sequestration are valuable side effects.…”

“…Deep injection wells are typically double cased, and placed below a confining unit in order to prevent vertical migration of contaminant and possible contamination of drinking water aquifers. A review of the geological criteria important for the location of deep injection wells intended for solids disposal is available in (Nadeem and Dusseault, 2007).…”
