Surface mapping, core logging, and compilation of underground mine maps in the Carr Fork area have led to the definition of the stratigraphic, structural, and time-space distribution of copper, copper-lead, and lead-zinc-silver ores in the western contact aureole of the Bingham stock. The succession of alteration-mineralization stages in sedimentary rocks is defined, and each stage tentatively is correlated with stages in the evolution of alteration-mineralization in the Bingham stock.Sedimentary rocks in the contact aureole are of Pennsylvanian age and consist of quartzite with lesser amounts of calcareous carbonaceous siltstone and limestone. Compressire deformation from the southeast during Mesozoic time formed east-west trending folds and bedding plane faults across the district; differential yielding resulted in overturning of folds in the highly deformed Carr Fork area. Following the main period of folding, stress was relieved by northward thrusting; in the Cart Fork area a set of northwest-striking imbricated thrust or right-lateral strike-slip faults formed in the upper plate of the basal Midas thrust. A system of northeast-striking faults, which were later to serve as major ore solution conduits, originated largely as tension fissures parallel to the direction of maximum principal stress. Multiple intrusions of monzonite and quartz monzonite during mid-Tertiary time were controlled to a large degree by the zone of north-east faults and by steep bedding. An Early Stage of contact metasomafism produced: diopside in quartzite and in interbedded, thin silty limestone beds; wollastonite, with minor idocrase and garnet, in thick cherry limestone; and a trace amount of sulfides. The Early Stage is related at least in part to the eraplacement of the quartz monzonite of the Bingham and Last Chance stocks and continued during the initial eraplacement of the quartz monzonite porphyry. Actinolite alteration of diopside in quartzite and garnetization of wollastonite-bearing marble represent the beginning of Main Stage mineralization and are time equivalent with biotite-orthoclase alteration of igneous rocks. As the stock is approached, actinolite alteration in quartzite and hornfels exhibits textural changes from bedding streaks to orbicules and to envelopes on fractures; closer to the instrusion, actinolite is altered to biotite along fractures. Traces of pyrite accompany actinolite in the outermost zones of bedding streaks and orbicules. Chalcopyrite accompanies pyrite as the fracture filling in the envelope zones. Near the stock, molybdenite veinlets have primarily biotite envelopes. Crosscutting veinlet relations indicate that the biotite zone expanded from the stock onto the outer actinolite zone during a trend toward increasing chalcopyrite:pyrite and molybdenite: Cu-Fe-sulfide ratios. The Bingham porphyry Cu-Au-Mo deposit, Utah, may only be world-class because of substantial contributions of sulfur and metals from mafic alkaline magma to an otherwise unremarkable calc-alkaline system. Volcanic mafic alkaline rocks in the district are enriched in Cr, Ni, and Ba as well as Cu, Au, platinum group elements (PGE), and S. The bulk of the volcanic section that is co-magmatic with ore-related porphyries is dacitic to trachytic in composition, but has inherited the geochemical signature of high Cr, Ni, and Ba from magma mixing with the mafic alkaline rocks. The volcanic section that most closely correlates in time with ore-related porphyries is very heterogeneous containing clasts of scoriaceous latite, latitic, and minette, and flows of melanephelinite, shoshonite, and olivine latite in addition to volumetrically dominant dacite/trachyte. Bingham ore-related porphyries show ample evidence of prior mixing with mafic alkaline magmas. Intrusive porphyries that have not been previously well-studied have several chemical and mineralogical indications of magma mixing. These ''mixed'' lithologies include the hybrid quartz monzonite porphyry, biotite porphyry, and minette dikes. Even some of the more silicic latite and monzonite porphyries retain high Cr and Ba contents indicative of mixing and contain trace amounts of sapphire (<1 mm). The heterogeneous block and ash flow deposits also contain sapphire and are permissively correlated with the intrusions based on chemical, mineralogical, and isotopic data. Magma mixing calculations suggest about 10% of the monzonitic/latitic orerelated magma may have been derived from mafic alkaline magma similar to the melanephelinite. If the original S content of the mafic magma was about 2,000-4,000 ppm, comparable with similar magmas, then the mafic magma may have been responsible for contributing more than half of the S and a significant portion of the Cu, Au, and PGE in the Bingham deposit.

Analysis of geologic data from the Salt Lake City region provides new understanding of the Sevier thrust belt foreland. Faulted segments of six major thrust plates, the Charleston-Nebo, North Oquirrh, Midas, Stockton, Tintic Valley, and Skull Valley, have been identified and correlated on the basis of their structural position and their stratigraphic and structural characteristics. Substantial movement is indicated on the sole Charleston-Nebo thrust, and smaller but unknown amounts of movement are inferred along the later, younger, and discontinuous thrusts farther to the west, which successively telescoped Paleozoic and Mesozoic miogeoclinal strata. Thrust plates were transported east-northeast to eastward, and their emplacement was affected by a buttress consisting of an uplifted Uinta-Cortez axial zone and adjacent northern Utah highland. Segmentation of plates by intraplate thrusts and by transcurrent (tear) faults was intensified particularly along the westward trace of the Uinta-Cortez axis. Plates thrust against the buttress are generally narrow and elongate north-south, and the easternmost plates are wrapped more tightly around the buttress. Fold style seems to vary systematically with thickness of plate strata and distance of a plate from the buttress. The North Oquirrh thrust plate, which apparently moved southeastward, presumably was derived from an unknown hinterland of the western Wyoming salient and stands in contrast with the main group thrust plates. The western edge of the thrust belt, or the root zone, lies an unknown distance west of the study area, probably in eastern Nevada.
