The postglacial climate history of Gondwana represents the most prominent climate amelioration in the Phanerozoic, ranging from severe icehouse conditions in the Late Carboniferous (Pennsylvanian) to extreme hothouse conditions in the Early Triassic.Here we report new sedimentological and palynological data from a 350 m thick coalbearing succession intersected by borehole 945L_0022, drilled in the eastern Tete Province of Mozambique, which documents southwestern Gondwana's Permian postglacial climate amelioration. Palynofacies data further support the environmental reconstructions interpreted from the sedimentary succession. Changes in the palynomorph assemblage document a shift from cold, to cool-temperate, to warmtemperate climatic conditions. This climate signature corresponds with observations from other depositional environments elsewhere in southern Africa, and thus enables correlation on a regional to interregional scale. Thick lacustrine deposits are described within the lower coal-bearing succession, reflecting the final glacial retreat, with melt waters supplying fresh water to the incipient lacustrine system. Lakes as characteristic postglacial sedimentary sinks are excellent palaeoclimate archives and the high Total Organic Carbon content of these fine-grained clastic sediments also makes them potential source rock targets for oil and gas.

This paper proposes pre-beneficiation studies by air jigs of the coal layers from a Moatize coal deposit. Pre-beneficiation, also called destoning, removes tailings before the beneficiation plant. The air jigs operate in the same granulometric size range as the heavy-media cyclones (HMCs) that are installed in the preparation plant. With the destoning, the heavy-media circuit operates with a lower coal feed and higher organic matter contents, increasing its cutting efficiency and lowering operational costs. The use of air jigs reduces the total water consumption in the plant, which is especially important for the region where the plant is installed, as water is particularly scarce. Four coal layers of the Moatize coal deposit were studied, which are currently exploited in the mine. As main results of the study, it is possible to say that the concentration of lights (feed of the preparation plant) and heavies (waste fraction) in air jigs can be carried out with reasonable efficiencies for all coal layers studied, making air jigs a feasible option for coal destoning.

Permian-Triassic ages have been identified for the first time in the Karoo Supergroup of the N'Condédzi sub-basin, Moatize-Minjova Coal Basin, Mozambique. This transition was identified in a coal exploration borehole that penetrated the Matinde and Cádzi formations. The top of the Matinde Formation is dated latest Permian (Lopingian), and the Cádzi Formation is attributed to Triassic based on palynostratigraphy. The Lopingian age is established by the identification of three palyno-assemblages: Assemblage L1 based on the first occurrence (FO) of Guttulapollenites pollen, Assemblage L2 is marked by the FO of Thymospora pseudothiessenii, and Assemblage L3 is defined by the FO of Osmundacidites senectus. Triassic palynomorphs were identified for the first time in Mozambique (Karoo basins). The data allowed the identification of three assemblages: Assemblage T1 defined by the FO of Densoisporites nejburgii of Induan age, Assemblage T2 is marked by the FO of Platysaccus queenslandi and assigned to the Olenekian age, and Assemblage T3 is defined by the FO of Samaropollenites speciosus and Enzonalasporites vigens, indicating a Carnian age. No Middle Triassic rocks were identified, and the early Triassic sediments are overlain by sedimentary rocks of Carnian age, a hiatus that may correspond to an important tectonic event with uplift and erosion. This tectonic event is also suggested by the occurrence of common reworked Permian palynomorphs in the Carnian sedimentary rocks. These new data constrain the age of the Karoo Supergroup formations of Mozambique and contribute to improve the palaeoecological, palaeoclimatic evolution, and the palaeogeographic position of the Karoo Mozambique basins within the Gondwana supercontinent.
