Geology of the Skorpion Supergene Zinc Deposit, Southern Namibia

Abstract: The Skorpion zinc deposit in southwestern Namibia comprises a significant nonsulfide orebody (24.6 Mt at 10.6% Zn) and subordinate amounts of primary base metal sulfide mineralization, which structurally underlies the nonsulfide ores at depth. The host rocks of the blind, nonsulfide orebody and relict sulfide mineralization consist of a mixed volcano-sedimentary sequence of Neoproterozoic age that has formed in an initial continental rift system between the Kalahari cratonic province and the Rio de la Plata cr… Show more

“…Some glacial or marine-glacial records prior to the Sturtian glaciations were reported in Africa and Northwest of China, including the Kundelungu glaciation in Zambia roughly between 765 ± 5 Ma and 735 ± 5 Ma7, the older glaciation of Port Nolloth Group in southwest Namibia between 752 ± 6 Ma and 741 ± 6 Ma56, and the Beiyixi diamictites in northwest China between 740 ± 7 Ma and 725 ± 10 Ma8. The Beiyixi Formation sediments also show very low CIA values (about 51~65)31.…”

“…Some diamictites prior to the Sturtian glaciations in Africa and Northwest China have been considered synchronous and indicative of a “Kaigas glaciation” roughly between 755 Ma and 735 Ma5678, but the chronological studies showed that these diamictites may be of different ages1. Extremely low δ 18 O values (−14‰~−8‰) were documented in various minerals (e.g.…”

“…The possibly correlative Numees IF of southern Namibia is only directly constrained to be younger than 751.9 ± 5.5 Ma based on a U-Pb SHRIMP age on metarhyolites in the underlying Hilda Subgroup (Borg et al, 2003).…”

“…The ore is hosted by a variably silicified carbonaceous mudstone that reaches as much as 50 m in thickness, with intercalated carbonate lenses, within an overall arkosic succession of the middle Rosh Pinah Formation (Alchin et al 2005). A protore in a similar stratigraphic position is regarded as the source for the secondary oxidized Zn deposit at Skorpion (25 Mt, average grade of 10.6 wt% Zn; Borg et al 2003), located c. 22 km NW of Rosh Pinah.…”
