Geometría de los depósitos cuaternarios y actuales de la Bahía de Cartagena de Indias, Colombia

Abstract

RESUMENSe analizan trece perfiles del subsuelo en la Bahía de Cartagena de Indias realizados con un perfilador, utilizando una frecuencia de 10 kHz. Se describen los estratos encontrados en las distintas partes de la bahía. Se encontraron zonas con sedimentos superficiales muy duros que permitieron poca penetración en el área externa de Bocagrande y capas de alrededor de 10 a 12 m de espesor de lodos blandos que se depositaron sobre estructuras de base más duras.Algunas de las estructuras profundas son viejos arrecifes coralinos y otros presentan estratos con inclinaciones abruptas de sedimentos, medianamente duros que implican antiguos depósitos manejados por dinámicas diferentes a la actual. Los perfiles realizados en la parte sur muestran el prisma sedimentario que ha formado la desembocadura del Canal del Dique en varias direcciones.Palabras clave: Sedimentología, Geomorfología, Bahia de Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. ABSTRACTThe description of the stratification found in the different parts of Cartagena de Indias Bay is presented by the analysis of thirteen sub-bottom transects made with a Stratabox 10 kHz sub-bottom profiler. There were zones with very hard superficial sediments that aloud little penetration in the external area off Bocagrande with layers of 10-12m of softer mud deposited over harder bases. Some deep structures are old coral reefs.Other transects present strata with steep slopes of semi-hard sediments implying old deposits handled by coastal dynamics different from the present. The southern sections show the sedimentary prism forms at the mouth of Canal del Dique in several directions.Topographic anomalies of the shelf seem to be inherited from a former coast line, controlled by structures in NNW direction that define the axes of the current bays, and for a megastructure possibly associated with Oca and Santa Marta fault systems, with an important role in the raising and evolution of the SNSM and the associate basins.

“…The Dique Channel has an important impact on the environmental quality of the bay due to the flow of freshwater and the transport of pollutants, nutrients, and sediments [ 77 , 87 , 93 ]. The sediment load to the bay has been estimated to be 2.6 and 1.3 Mt y −1 during the wet and dry periods, respectively [ 94 ], which are evenly distributed until reaching the coral substrates and accumulated in the area due to the shallow depth of Bocachica [ 95 ]. In general, these geographical characteristics of Cartagena Bay determine the dynamics of local communities, the tourism industry, and economic development activities, which significantly influence the environmental changes, impact of pollution, and adaptation to climate change.…”
