Geometric Accuracy of Digital Twins for Structural Health Monitoring

Abstract: We present an exploratory analysis of the geometric accuracy of digital twins generated for existing infrastructure using point clouds. The Level of Geometric Accuracy is a vital specification to measure the twinning quality of the resulting twins. However, there is a lack of a clear definition of the Level of Geometric Accuracy for twins generated in the operation and maintenance stage, especially for structural health monitoring purposes. We critically review existing industry applications and twinning metho… Show more

“…The product created an SHM system for maintenance and damage avoidance. Lu et al (2021) discussed supplying a DT with a solid level of geometric accuracy for SHM. Twinning a structure using point clouds encountered difficulties due to geometric irregularities in as-built structures.…”

“…Using simulations and data analysis, DTs facilitate the early detection of structural abnormalities or damage, enabling proactive maintenance and timely interventions [89][90][91]. The integration of SHM with DT technology enhances monitoring systems, enabling more accurate evaluation of a building's condition, prediction of potential risks, and optimisation of maintenance strategies [88][89][90][91][92]. Much research has been conducted endeavouring to implement DT technology for enhancing SHM practices in the AEC industry [88,89,[91][92][93][94][95][96].…”

“…Cities are complex environments whose management demands taking a great deal of variables and factors into consideration [87]. Digital twin technologies enable the tracking and monitoring of urban processes in all their forms [33,88,89], thereby facilitating optimal transportation systems [90] as well as unveiling areas for improvements in energy, food and water supply. As a result, a more -AI helps detecting fraud but still lacks solutions to raise awareness against it.…”
