Geometric model of tufts based on the internal fiber configurations

Abstract: Fiber tufts were modeled as random fibrous materials based on the statistical orientations of the observed fibers. The tufts with different fiber properties were analyzed experimentally and simulated well. It was found that the distribution of fiber orientation angles is not uniform. The simulations of tufts have confirmed that the sizes of tufts could also be affected by the orientation angle distribution of the constituted fibers. The model was verified by the simulated tufts and the tested ones. Good agreem… Show more

“…Cotton, viscose, and polyester fibers were selected as raw materials to prepare tufts for tests. The raw materials selected in this study are consistent with those in the previous work, 35 as well as the prepared tufts. The fiber strengths were tested with an LY-06 EDC electronic single fiber strength tester.…”

“…The tufts are disentangled progressively as the compressed fiber mass is separated into small tufts and, ultimately, the individual fibers. Based on the tuft model that we established previously, 35 the numerical model of tuft disentanglement is established here considering the carding action and fiber interaction.…”
