Geomorphological Map of the Ionian Area between the Trionto and Colognati River Catchments (Calabria, Italy)

Abstract: This paper describes a geomorphological map representing a sector of the Ionian coastal belt, located in north-eastern Calabria, between the catchments of the Trionto and Colognati Rivers. The landforms have been distinguished according to their origin into: a) structural and tectonic-controlled landforms; b) gravity-induced landforms; c) landforms formed by running water; d) coastal and transitional landforms; e) anthropic landforms, using as support a simplified topographic map on scale 1:20,000. The geomorp… Show more

“…The depositional environments include sub-aerial to submerged beaches. These deposits are arranged in a staircase of terraces the age of which has not been differentiated in the present study but can be correlated to the marine and alluvial terraces observed to the north, in the Rossano area (Carobene, 2003;Corbi et al, 2009;Robustelli et al, 2009a;2009b).…”

“…The CN represents a back-thrust, initially propagated during the late Tortonian with displacement continuing during Messinian-Pliocene time in a left-lateral NW-SE oriented transpressive fault zone . The basin succession of the CN is unconformably overlain by Pliocene to Upper Pleistocene succession made up of clay, sand and conglomerate, the latter forming a staircase of terraces, as observed north and south of the study area, in the Rossano (Carobene, 2003;Corbi et al, 2009;Robustelli et al, 2009a;2009b) and Crotone (Lucà, Robustelli, Conforti, & Fabbricatore, 2011;Zecchin, Nalin, & Roda, 2004) basins, respectively.…”

“…Therefore, the origin of each part of the relief could be evaluated equally. On traditional geomorphological maps (Demek et al, 1972), however, only significant landforms are presented (and their genesis is explicitly shown on the map), while remaining parts of the relief are covered by a map of gradient (Demek and Kopecký, 1998), lithology (Cía and Andrés, 2008;Robustelli et al, 2009) or DEM (Ventura et al, 2005).…”

“…They are strongly dependent on the characteristics of the rocky substrate (Jiménez-Sanchez et al, 1999;Domínguez-Cuesta et al, 1999;Robustelli et al, 2009). Landslides are found in the quartzite interfluves on the ridge's northern side, which is characterized by significant arenization of rocks in situ, a dense network of fractures and deep surface formations which cover the slopes.…”
