“…These structures are divided landward to seaward by sandy sedimentary deposits of varying thicknesses and crest at *4-16 m below sea level (Duane and Meisburger 1969;Raymond 1972;Banks et al 2007Banks et al , 2008. Early descriptions by Duane and Meisburger (1969) and Macintyre and Milliman (1970) referred to them as ''reef-like structures'' and ''inactive coral reefs''. More recently, they have been described as relict, backstepping reefs in response to Holocene sea-level rise (Precht et al 2000;Banks et al 2007).…”

“…When Islands associated with the coral and mud-based Florida Keys Physiographic Realm archipelago are classified as the predominant geoform, the resultant landforms include Bay Key, Karst Island, and Salina (Finkl, 2004;Hoffmeister, 1974;Lidz et al, 1997;Nunn, 1994). Sediment Flat Geoforms, which constitute extensive, unconsolidated seafloor sediments composed of sand and mud combinations, are divided among the landforms of Intertidal Sand Flat and Planar Bed Forms and Ripples (Davis, Hine, and Shinn, 1992;Duane and Meisburger, 1969;Finkl, 2004;Finkl and Andrews, 2008;Finkl and Warner, 2005;Finkl, Benedet, and Andrews, 2005b;Finkl et al, 2008;Hoffmeister, 1974;Lidz, Robbin, and Shinn, 1985). The geoform of Dune and Beach is a geomorphologically coupled coastal system consisting of Holocene dune fields, foredunes, and beach berms.…”

“…Fine shoreface sands similar to type F sediment are generally common to the south, but have not been given a letter designation in two ICONS studies of this region (Duane and Meisburger, 1969;Field and Duane, 1974). In the Fort Pierce area Meisburger and Duane (1971) identified the shoreface sands as type U sediment.…”
