Geophysical Investigation of Fresh‐Saline Water Interface: A Case Study from South Punjab, Pakistan

Abstract: The importance of the study of fresh-saline water incursion cannot be over-emphasized. Borehole techniques have been widely used, but they are quite expensive, intrusive, and time consuming. The electrical resistivity method has proved very successful in groundwater assessment. This advanced technique uses the calculation of Dar-Zarrouk (D-Z) parameters, namely longitudinal unit conductance, transverse unit resistance, and longitudinal resistivity has been employed by using 50 vertical electrical sounding poin… Show more

“…Longitudinal conductance with values less than 0.8 S indicates high potential aquifer with fresh water; with values from 0.8 to 1.2 S, it shows medium potential aquifer of brackish water; with values greater than 1.2 S, it represents saline water of low aquifer potential. Dar Zarrouk parameters value ranges for different aquifer potential zones were assigned on the basis of interpreted resistivities after the correlation of these resistivity ranges with lithological boreholes (Hasan et al ). The interpreted aquifer potential zones by both transverse resistance and longitudinal conductance have a good correlation and matching, as shown in Figure .…”

“…Dar Zarrouk parameters, namely total transverse resistance ( T r ) and total longitudinal conductance ( S c ), were calculated for each layer of geoelectrical sounding with different combinations of resistivity and thickness (Hasan et al . ): 0trueTr=i=1nhnormaliρnormali=h1ρ1+h2ρ2++hnormalnρnormaln=hρ,0trueSc=i=1nhnormali/ρnormali=h1/ρ1+h2/ρ2++hnormaln/ρnormaln=h/ρ,where T r is the transverse resistance (Ω m 2 ), S c is the longitudinal conductance (mho), ρ is the resistivity (Ω m), h is the thickness (in m) and i is the number of layers. The following relation can be obtained using equations and : T=KTnormalr/ρ.…”
