Geoscience after IT Part I. A view of the conventional geoscience information system

Abstract: -We need a strategy to cope with fundamental changes in our ways of working, based on a clear view of what we do and why. A systems view is essential to relate each part to the whole. This model of the geoscience information system should take into account: the need to separate data and process to enable reuse; the modes of thought of the geoscientist and how memory orders our thoughts; the shared geoscience record (knowledge base) and its interface with users; how ideas are linked as a network; how knowledge … Show more

“…Interoperability is essential for efficient information retrieval and knowledge discovery in studies and applications using geological data (cf. Loudon, 2000; study of being in philosophy. Ontologies have been extensively studied to address data interoperability issues in different knowledge or scientific domains, such as genetics (Ashburner, 2000), geographical information (Frank, 2001), soil classification (Rossiter, 2007), and solar-terrestrial physics (Fox et al, 2009), etc.…”

“…Compared to hierarchically organized concepts (or terms) expressed in a natural language, a coding system is a simpler representation of concepts in a knowledge domain (Loudon, 2000;Deissenboeck and Pizka, 2006;. Codes use short abbreviations to represent information defined by concepts or terms (Mori, 1995;Cimino, 1998).…”
