Geospatial Analysis of Earthquake Damage Probability of Water Pipelines Due to Multi-Hazard Failure

Abstract: Abstract:The main purpose of this study is to develop a Geospatial Information System (GIS) model with the ability to assess the seismic damage to pipelines for two well-known hazards, including ground shaking and ground failure simultaneously. The model that is developed and used in this study includes four main parts of database implementation, seismic hazard analysis, vulnerability assessment and seismic damage assessment to determine the pipeline's damage probability. This model was implemented for main wa… Show more

“…Vulnerability is the condition generated by physical, social, economic, and environmental factors that influence the susceptibility of a community to the impacts of hazards [6]. These phenomenon are either introduced via natural causes and/or by humans [7,8] and are globally recognized due to their widespread occurrences [9][10][11][12]. Numbers of natural hazards and the loss and damages due to such events have increased globally in the past few decades [12].…”

Numbers of natural hazards and the loss and damages due to such events have increased globally in the past few decades [12]. A total of 330 disasters were triggered by the beginning of 2014, and this increased to 376 in 2015 [13].…”

“…With the rapid development of cities, many pipelines are moving into underground to free more space and land for city re-planning, such as power line, utility lines and so on. Underground pipeline plays crucial role in city development, disaster management (Eskandari et al, 2017;Li et al, 2019Li et al, , 2018. Underground pipeline is more complex owing to it is buried under the ground.…”

“…Urban underground pipelines, which are known as "urban blood vessels", consist of a series of pipelines for water supply, drainage, gas, heat, electricity, communications, television transmission, and other industries [1]. Underground pipeline data play a key role in smart cities, disaster evaluation, and so on [2][3][4]. For different applications, there are differences in the data model, location accuracy, and attribute information, especially between integrated underground pipeline data and professional underground pipeline data, which are collected by different departments.…”
