Geospatial analysis of urban sprawl in Ile-Ife city, Nigeria

Abstract: This paper assesses the effects of urban expansion of Ile-Ife city and appraises the changes that occurred in the landscape from 1986 to 2009. The study made use of information extracted from Landsat TM 1986, ETM + 2002 and Ikonos 2009 images. GPS observations of notable points within and around the city were overlaid on the topographic map and on the satellite imageries in order to appraise the changes in the land use and land cover over the period. The land consumption was analyzed using the computed land co… Show more

“…Nigeria has been recording struggling cities with a rising population that continues to affect its territorial LULC transformations (Adepoju, 2018;Balogun et al, 2011;Bello et al, 2014;Oloukoi et al, 2014;Oluseyi, 2006). This greener pasture migration is a contributing factor to LULC changes.…”

“…The RS technology has become a vital instrument that is adapted to assist stakeholders to evaluate and pre-empt LULC as they occur over time. For developing cities with limited capabilities, advances in RS technologies are contributing to their substantial improvement in environmental resource monitoringoriented researches (Aliyu and Botai, 2018b,a;Bello et al, 2014;Oloukoi et al, 2014). The findings obtained from the readily available RS datasets have continued to provide stakeholders with a better grasp and informed position for current and future policy plans (Aliyu and Botai, 2018a;Mahboob et al, 2015;Schaeffer et al, 2013).…”

“…Nevertheless, none of these studies have combined different resolution data such as Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM); Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+); and Operational Land Imager and Thermal Infrared Sensor (OLI-TIRS) in measuring land use change or loss estimation in developing countries. Also, several studies in Nigeria have examined various aspects of environmental change, particularly land cover dynamics (Adeniyi & Omojola, 1999;Fabiyi, 2006;Braimoh & Onishi, 2008;Tokula & Ejaro, 2013;Oloukoi, Oyinloye & Yadjemi, 2014;Dekolo, Oduwaye & Nwokoro, 2016). However, recent and up-to-date studies on the effects of urban growth on agricultural land are scanty in the literature.…”

“…This is the annual average rate of spatial expansion between 1988 and 2000 on the one hand and between 2000 and 2015 on the other hand. It is calculated from the formula (Puyravaud, 2003, Schulz et al, 2010, Oloukoi et al, 2014, Tohozin, 2016 as follows: T = (1 / (t 2 -t 1)) x ln (S 2 / S 1); with T, the annual change rate, t1 the year of departure and t2 the year of arrival, S1 the area size at the date t1 and S2, the area size at the date t2, ln the natural logarithm.…”
