Geotechnical Characteristics of Anhydrite/Gypsum Transformation in the Middle Miocene Evaporites, Red Sea Coast, Egypt

Abstract: The Middle Miocene evaporites of Abu Dabbab Formation, north of Quseir City along the Red Sea coast of Egypt are composed mainly of thinly laminated, bedded and nodular anhydrite and microcrystalline gypsum especially in its lowermost part. Highly cracked inter-bedded clay, dolomite and stromatolite layers were recorded within the evaporite succession. The cracks in the inter-bedded clays are filled with evaporite materials indicating arid climatic conditions during exposure episodes. Swelling mechanisms in cl… Show more

“…In arid regions, the investigation of evaporitic rocks provides useful information due to their complexity and diverse geological, environmental, and geotechnical contributions [2] , [3] , [4] , [5] , [6] . This distinction points out the need for a comprehensive study that not only addresses origin and paleoenvironmental conditions but also addresses engineering issues, particularly in construction [6] , [7] , [8] .…”

“…Evaporite minerals are varied, as are their geomechanical behaviors, so it is important to take them into account, especially when they are present in the rock mass of underground infrastructures (Giambastiani, 2020). Specifically, the presence of gypsum or anhydrite has been found to affect the geomechanical properties of infrastructures, in various types of locations and geological environments (Abu Seif, 2014;Alberto et al, 2008;Alonso et al, 2013;Gutiérrez et al, 2008).…”
