Geotechnical laboratory characterization of sand-zeolite mixtures.

Abstract: Zeolite and sand mixture is an ideal reactive filling material for the Permeable Reactive barrier (PRB) due to its higher hydraulic conductivity and sorption capacity. This study applied three ASTM standard tests to examine the geotechnical engineering properties of ASTM 20-30 sand and zeolite (clinoptilolite) mixtures with varying zeolite mass percentages (25%, 50%and 75%). Conducted lab tests including:Proctor compaction, hydraulic conductivity in rigid wall permeameter and onedimensional consolidation. The g… Show more

“…Zeolite has the following properties: adsorption -the ability to absorb and release various substances; ion exchange -the ability to exchange cations; catalytic -the ability to speed up chemical reactions [20]. In addition, zeolite has a molecular sieve effect that transmits (filtration) and absorbs molecules of various substances selectively [21].…”

“…According to studies conducted by Shang [22] and given the lack of enough data to explore the effect of heavy metals and adsorbents on the geotechnical behavior of soils, the main question that arises is whether addition of adsorbents such as zeolite and rice husk ash (RHA) to soil contaminated with heavy metals such as lead and zinc can alter the resistance parameters of this soil. For this purpose, this paper will investigate the effect of the presence of heavy metals and adsorbents on the geotechnical behavior of clayey sandy soils.…”

“…These days in South Korea due to the rapid growth of industrial factories, soil and groundwater are more susceptible to be contaminated with various kind of polluters. Especially, soil contamination of industrial zones is has become a severe problem due to its high concentration of contaminants [17], [18]. Unlike other kinds of pollution, soil contamination is hard to detect until certain damage occurs and the aspect of pollution is depended on the soil property.…”
