Germination Requirements of Bacillus macerans Spores

Abstract: 2-Phenylacetamide is an effective germinant for spores of five strains of Bacillus macerans, particularly in the presence of fructose. Benzyl penicillin, the phenyl acetamide derivative of penicillin, and phenylacetic acid are also good germinants. L-Asparagine is an excellent germinant for four strains. a-Amino-butyric acid is moderately effective. Pyridoxine, pyridoxal, adenine, and 2, 6-diaminopurine are potent germinants for NCA strain 7X I only. D-Glucose is a powerful germinant for strain B-70 only. D-Fr… Show more

“…Germination in spores of B. megaterium QM B1551 in response to D-glucose, D-mannose and Lalanine, while no germination in response to galactose was also reported by Hyatt and Levinson (1964), Racine et al (1979), Christie and Lowe (2007) in their work which is in line with the findings obtained in current investigation. Dglucose has also been proved to be a powerful germinant inducing rapid germination in spores of Bacillus macerans B70 (Sacks and Thompson 1971), Clostridium botulinum Type E (Ando 1971), while for spores of these bacteria, Dmannose was found effective only at increasing concentration levels. Ando (1971) also reported maximum germination in spores of Clostridium botulinum Type E with galactose.…”

“…Diverse peptides were detected in B. subtilis trpC2 broth. Nicotinamide reportedly enhances growth of both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, such as M. avium, Propionibacterium acnes, S. aureus, and B. macerans [73][74][75][76]. Indole-3-carboxaldehyde was shown to efficiently inhibit biofilm formation by Vibrio cholerae O1 [77].…”
