Gerontechnology: Providing a Helping Hand When Caring for Cognitively Impaired Older Adults—Intermediate Results from a Controlled Study on the Satisfaction and Acceptance of Informal Caregivers

Abstract: The incidence of cognitive impairment in older age is increasing, as is the number of cognitively impaired older adults living in their own homes. Due to lack of social care resources for these adults and their desires to remain in their own homes and live as independently as possible, research shows that the current standard care provisions are inadequate. Promising opportunities exist in using home assistive technology services to foster healthy aging and to realize the unmet needs of these groups of citizen… Show more

“…s-Health technologies are also seen to improve the ability to cope with challenging situations that arise from living with the condition [31]. There seems to be some empowerment happening as the costs and time saved by using the technology allow informal caregivers to gain more freedom [12,32,33]. For example, as shown in the study by Mitseva et al [32], being able to avoid the hassle of going over to the care centers or visiting the PwD’s home was afforded by technology.…”

“… 37 Moreover, the biggest complaints from participants were about the IWSS intervention’s intrusiveness and complexity, which corroborated other studies. 38 40 This tends to support the possible explanation that older adults suffering from a cognitive impairment find innovative technologies too complicated to use, and thus, the interventions are not always useful in helping them to become more independent or offering them the benefits of an enhanced quality of life. Also, the IWSS demonstrated multiple unexpected technical failures, which caused feelings of doubt about its ease of use and applicability for increasing autonomy at home and enhancing the quality of life.…”

“…This robot is an AI device that helps seniors remain mentally sharp, socially connected and physically healthy (INF Robotics, 2020). As part of the ISISEMD project, Mitseva et al (2012) have designed, implemented, verified, and evaluated the Assistive Technology Platform for Personalised Home Care (telecare) for cognitively impaired elderly people and their caretakers, offering intelligent home support services. The study presents the results of indirect assessments of user satisfaction with the system, technology and service acceptance and quality of life as a result of using these services.…”
