Getting Data to Drilling and Completions Teams and Vice Versa

Abstract: The paper describes some simple, but effective steps in providing drilling and completions data and visualisation in support of enhanced collaboration whilst allowing for future growth. The solution is based on WITSML and is implemented in the Operator's Advanced Collaborative Environment (ACE) in Aberdeen. The transmission of large amounts of data onshore, from the rig is a relatively easy task but ensuring that these data are accurate and usable in both industry and proprietary tools is more of a challenge. “…Further information on a move toward an operator-owned and -managed architecture for internal storage, viewing, and integration of data across multiple assets is presented by Sawaryn et al (2009). The authors point out that vendor-provided solutions are "still geared toward providing data through their proprietary data packages and tools," which works well on a local basis but can compromise ability to consolidate data on a broader scale and over a longer time frame.…”

“…The resulting architecture may largely comprise vendor products, but overall design and evolution are owned by the operator. Statoil (Deeks and Halland 2008), BP (Pickering et al 2007(Pickering et al , 2009Sawaryn et al 2009), and Saudi Aramco (Khudiri et al 2009) appear to be assuming more ownership and control of internal real-time data architectures. This second wave of adoption of WITSML also refl ects the maturing of the standard itself to a point at which it is capable of implementing higher-level processes.…”

“…Frequently, the different parties involved simply pass on the problem, rather than resolving it. The possible complexities are illustrated by Sawaryn et al (2009).…”
