Getting Them Back in the Game: When Can Athletes With Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Safely Return to Sports? A Mixed-effects Study of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Association of North America

Abstract: Background: Despite the relative frequency of posterior spinal fusion (PSF) and instrumentation for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), there are limited guidelines for postoperative return to sports. Few studies explore factors influencing treating surgeons' recommendations. Methods: A survey presenting several clinical vignettes of patients who had undergone PSF for AIS was distributed to 1496 Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) members. “…Previous survey studies have highlighted the concern many surgeons have with allowing patients to return to certain sports, particularly collision sports, after PSF. 7,8,11,12 Sarwahi et al 6 found that 83.3% of their participants returned to collision sports. In the present study, all participants who played collision sports preoperatively were cleared for full-contact sports postoperatively.…”

“…The survey was distributed to the POSNA membership, but the 6.5% response rate is significantly lower than the 42% average response rate for a POSNA survey 27. There has been a trend toward declining survey response rates from the POSNA membership in recent years,27 with recent publications reporting response rates between 9.7% and 21.3% 28–31. In addition, surgeons who opted to respond to the survey may have increased interest in parental leave policies due to personal positive or negative experiences.…”

“…27 There has been a trend toward declining survey response rates from the POSNA membership in recent years, 27 with recent publications reporting response rates between 9.7% and 21.3%. [28][29][30][31] In addition, surgeons who opted to respond to the survey may have increased interest in parental leave policies due to personal positive or negative experiences. Thus, responses are likely skewed to represent the perceptions of these respondents and may not accurately represent the attitudes of most pediatric orthopaedic surgeons.…”
